Frangipani Flower Care and Tips

Many proud owners check every day if their beloved Frangipani is developing a bud (umbel). However, many owners still search in the wrong place. The bud of a Frangipani only forms at the shoot tip, where leaves usually develop. After a bloom, a Frangipani typically branches into up to 5 new shoots. However, it can also happen that no new branching occurs!

How long does it take for a bud to develop into a complete flower? From the discovery of the bud to the finished bloom takes (it always depends on the plant) 4-6 weeks. There are slowly growing varieties that sometimes require more than 6 weeks from bud to bloom. Does my Frangipani bloom every year? It depends on how many shoots your plant has. In Europe, a general rule is that a bloom can only form on a shoot every 2 years, because it only becomes strong enough again after 2 years. If you have a multi-shoot plant and not every shoot produces a bloom, it can therefore produce flowers every year. Can I force my plant to bloom? Fertilizer? No. Of course, you can help the plant get the right nutrients (fertilizer), but whether a bloom ultimately develops depends on many factors. The plant receives enough UV light (sunlight) The plant has sufficient water Night temperatures do not drop below 15°C The plant is mature and strong enough to bloom If all these factors are optimal, nothing should stand in the way of a beautiful flower.

When will my Frangipani seedling bloom? If you have grown a Frangipani from seeds, it can take 4-10 years until the first flower develops. The plant must be strong enough. From about 1 meter in height and a trunk diameter of 5 cm, the plant should be ready to bloom. I have received / bought a cutting. When will it bloom? Cuttings are usually immediately capable of blooming. If it doesn’t have roots yet, the bloom will appear (after successful rooting) in the following year. If it already has roots, a bloom can occur in the same year.
