Bloom Instead of Bun or Fake Bloom - Plumeria Care

A Bun is an Annoying Thing

Which Plumeria lover is not familiar with the situation? You wait 3 or more years for the first bloom of a seedling and then only a strange bun appears, and you know you have to wait at least another 2 years for the plant to try again. Isn’t that enough to drive you crazy?

We have all certainly experienced this frustration at least once. Many don’t even know what this bun is supposed to be. After all, the plant branches out after ‚bun formation‘. But that’s the only advantage you can glean from the situation.

But what is this bun?

This bun is actually the plant’s attempt to form a flower bud. Unfortunately, the plant is not strong enough to give the bud the final push, resulting in a ‚fake‘ or ‚pseudo‘ bloom. Just a plug.

What can we do about it?

If we recognize in time that a budding attempt looks like a bun, we can carefully pinch off all the tiny leaves around the bud with our fingernails. A long, pointed pair of scissors (that should be clean) can also work. After up to 10 days, we can see if this intervention has been successful. You should then see that the plant is now forming an umbel instead of a bun. This way, we can get our seedling to show us its first bloom. This phenomenon can also occur in mature plants if they lack the strength for bud formation for certain reasons.

One can recognize a possible bun formation. So all small leaves at the end of the shoot are removed.

Unfortunately, one reacted too late and the bun cannot turn into a bloom at this stage. At least there are 3 new branches (white arrows).

Success all around. The initial bun is now developing into a bud, as the small leaves were removed in time. Unfortunately, this process does not always work!
