Plumeria Cuttings - What must (should) I pay attention to?
Not all cuttings are the same, even if the variety is the same. Sometimes we are simply blinded by the price. But what can happen when we want to save money? The bigger and stronger a cutting is, the more energy it has. For the frangipani friend, this means that the chance of root formation is naturally higher, although there is NEVER a guarantee that a cutting will take root at all.
With a large cutting you still have a kind of "safety buffer" in case the cut should rot at the bottom. Then you can always cut off another 2-3cm, which is not possible with a stub.
Of course, one cannot rule out the possibility that even a thin cutting can develop into a beautiful plant.
Aztec Gold Cuttings
In 2020, I simply had the fun of buying cuttings from various suppliers.
In the picture you can see the difference between the cuttings. The one on the far left (19cm, 1 shoot, already extremely shrivelled) was an ebay bargain for 15€. What I have to do with it was written on a little note in English. I would never have been able to read it without my glasses. The middle cutting (34cm, 1 shoot, slightly shrivelled) I bought from a Facebook seller for 19€ (without invoice, without care instructions). Easy payment PayPal, cutting came wrapped in paper without any extra note.
Cutting number 3 comes from our partner and with 61cm and 2 shoots it is a completely different category. The price in our shop is 29€ (depending on the rarity of the variety also more).
So you really always have to pay attention to what you get.
If you absolutely want to take the risk ebay or Amazon, ask the seller the following beforehand:
- how long is the cutting 1
- how many shoots does the cutting have 2
- the cutting was cut from a flowering mother tree 3
- the interface has dried and not fallen inwards 4
If all this fits, a private purchase should also result in a beautiful plant.
So here we see 3 cuttings of the variety "Aztek Gold" and it should be clear which one has the higher chance of rooting.
